Ou-yang Feng (Leslie Cheung) lives in the middle of a desert, where he acts as a middle man to various swordsmen in ancient China. One of those swordsmen is Huang Yao-shi (Tony Leung), who has found some magic wine that causes one to forget the past. At another time, Huang met Mu-rong Yin (Brigette Lin) and under the influence of drink, promised to marry Mu-rong's sister Mu-rong Yang. Huang jilts her, and Mu-rong Yin hires Ou-yang to kill Huang. But then Mu-rong Yang hires Ou-yang to protect Huang. This is awkward, because Mu-rong Yang and Mu-rong Yin are in reality the same person. Other unrelated plot lines careen about. Among them is Ou-yang's continuing efforts to destroy a band of horse thieves. Oy-yang recruits another swordsman (Tony Leung, but the other one), a man who is going blind and wants to get home to see his wife before his sight goes completely. The swordsman is killed. Ou-yang then meets another swordsman (Jackie Cheung) who doesn't like wearing shoes. Oy-yang sends this man after the horse thieves, with better results. We then find out what a man must give up to follow the martial path.

ADIOS A MI CONCUBINA

China, 1925. Los militares gobiernan Pekín y aunque en la ciudad la política es inestable, hay una constante en la vida cotidiana: la ópera, un espectáculo donde incluso los personajes femeninos deben ser representados por hombres. Entre los nuevos muchachos destinados a ser estrellas de la ópera de Pekín se encuentra el delicado Douzi y Shitou, que le toma bajo su protección. Forjan una gran amistad y Douzi se enamora profundamente del chico mayor. Como Douzi tiene la belleza de una mujer, le forman en papeles femeninos, así como al atlético Shitoule entrenan principalmente para papeles militares. Entre las óperas que estudian se encuentra ”Adiós a mi concubina”. En el año 1937, víspera de la invasión japonesa, Douzi y Shitou, ahora conocidos por sus nombres artísticos, Cheng Dieyi y Duan Xiaolou, son los actores más famosos de Pekín. Por estas fechas Duan se enamora de Juxian, la prostituta más popular del afamado burdel ”La casa de las flores”, con la que se casa. Dieyi está totalmente enamorado de Xiaolou, y este hecho le deja lleno de angustia y celos.

En 1966 estalla la revolución cultural y Xiaolou está entre los detenidos por la Guardia Roja. En un juicio popular Xiaolou no aguanta más y revela los ”crímenes homosexuales” de Dieyi que responde con un ataque furioso contra Juxian y su pasado. Xiaolou, temeroso, declara que romperá toda relación con ella y Juxian se suicida. Año 1977. Dieyi quiere representar ”Adiós a mi concubina” por última vez con Xiaolou.
